Work more deliberately on shared networks

Know what a VPN does—and what it does not do.

A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN service. It can be useful on public or untrusted networks, but it is not an invisibility switch.

A practical path

Build this part of your system

Use these steps as a decision sequence—not a shopping list.

01

Identify the use case

Consider a VPN when working on public Wi-Fi, traveling, or connecting through networks you do not control.

02

Update and restart when needed

Keep updates, screen locks, backups, and malware defenses in place. Restart after updates when prompted so changes can finish. Routine shutdowns can refresh a device, but they do not replace security controls.

03

Manage browser privacy

Cookies can remember logins and activity. Clear site data on shared devices or when troubleshooting, and consider a privacy-focused browser that blocks many third-party trackers. This reduces some tracking; it does not make activity anonymous.

04

Check the VPN details

Review supported devices, connection limits, current pricing, renewal terms, and the provider’s privacy information. Websites may still identify you through logins, cookies, account activity, or other signals.

Tools, in context

Use a tool only when it fits the job

ABiz explains the decision first, then points to a relevant resource where an approved, tested link is available.

Tested link

Namecheap FastVPN

Best for: Individuals or small teams evaluating a straightforward VPN option

Review the current plans and device support, then compare them with the way you actually work.

Educational option

DuckDuckGo Browser

Best for: Reducing common third-party tracking during everyday browsing

DuckDuckGo says its browser and search products block many trackers and avoid creating personal search histories. It is a privacy tool, not a guarantee of anonymity, malware protection, or safe websites, and it does not replace a VPN when the VPN use case fits.

Keep in mind

A VPN does not make activity anonymous, prevent every threat, or replace secure websites, MFA, device protection, and sound judgment.
